Sustainable Whisky: How We Turn ‘Wonky Glass’ Into Beautiful Bottles

Sustainable Whisky: How We Turn ‘Wonky Glass’ Into Beautiful Bottles

Sustainability isn’t something we plan to solve in the future, it’s something we act on now.

As an independent whisky brand, we knew we had to think differently. Rather than relying on new technology or long‑term promises, we asked a simpler question: how can we reduce waste today?

That question led us to an unlikely solution, one that embraces imperfection and turns waste into something meaningful. It’s why River Rock is proud to be the only spirit brand in the world using ‘wonky glass’ in every bottle we produce.

What Is ‘Wonky Glass’?

In glass manufacturing, colour changes between production runs can create irregular or inconsistent glass. Traditionally, this glass doesn’t meet visual standards and is discarded.

This is what the industry refers to as “wonky glass.”

Instead of treating these variations as flaws, we saw them for what they are: a wasted resource with character, individuality, and potential.

By reclaiming and repurposing this glass, we reduce waste, save energy, and give new life to material that would otherwise be thrown away.

A Sustainable Whisky Bottle with Built‑In Individuality

Using wonky glass means no two River Rock bottles look the same.

Each bottle has its own natural tint, some clearer, some greener, shaped by material that already exists rather than being re‑manufactured from scratch.

Importantly, the whisky inside never changes.
The liquid remains consistent, carefully selected, and crafted to deliver the same balanced flavour every time.

This approach allows us to create a sustainable whisky bottle that reflects individuality without compromising quality.

Reducing Waste Beyond the Bottle

Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at glass.

  • We deliberately avoid secondary packaging, removing unnecessary waste from the outset
  • Our shipping solution is provided by Flexi‑Hex, reducing plastic in transit
  • Our labels are printed on FSC‑certified recycled paper
  • We avoid foils and unnecessary inks
  • Each bottle is sealed with a biodegradable cellulose closure

We are proud to be 100% plastic‑free, by design rather than by compromise.

Acting Now, Not Later

Many large brands talk about what they will deliver in the future.

We believe the future isn’t soon enough.

As a smaller, independent whisky brand, we have the ability and responsibility to take action now. Every decision we make is focused on reducing impact today, even if the change feels incremental.

Sustainability as an Ongoing Process

Sustainability isn’t a final destination. It’s a continuous process of improvement, reassessment, and better decision‑making.

We know there is always more to do, and we are committed to evolving, not for perfection, but for progress.

Our commitment to sustainability is closely tied to the way our bottles are designed and made. We’ll be sharing the full story behind the River Rock bottle design here soon.
